Recalling My Prior View On The Prospects of Healthcare Reform

Posted on

Healthcare ReformQuoted from 8/23/09
Healthcare reform will fail you and I
To be clear every level of healthcare system is set up to deal with the foreseeable and definitively detectable. Mental healthcare is trickier. It is more difficult to diagnose and it is an inexact science. On top of that we allow general physicians who are not adequately qualified to diagnose mental health problems to prescribe drugs and treatment without the patient getting the benefit of a full physical and mental work up. Insurance companies treat mental healthcare as an extra annoyance. This despite all the knowledge we have accumulated that shows the yearly increase of mental health problems and medical problems tied to mental health problems a flaw prevails. The flaw centers around not one healthcare proposal sufficiently offering a clear path to reversing this trend. In truth they all support the continuation of this failure.

The key to heathcare and mental healthcare reform
One word “Education”. It may seem trivial but 15 minutes three time a week would go a long way. It can start in preschool. When you think about it we all dabble in this education with a concept we call “self improvement.” This is a yearly billion dollar industry. While we do have exercises and games to promote positive concepts, when do not have a complete core training concept. If we teach our children to speak mental health freely. If we teach them to employ positive thinking and mental health concepts from a young age, the number of untreated, misdiagnose, over diagnosed, misprescribed and over medicated people will decline. Instead of increasing the numbers by the thousands who suffer will reverse the trend. If only 1% benefits in the beginning, that 1% will grow exponentially over time. The reality is there are no quick fixes. This is no one part of healthcare where we can just add water and stir for an instant resolve.

In The Present

The fact is Obamacare is going through the pains I outlined back in 2009. Another fact is any healthcare reform plan when adopted would have gone through the same. That is where initiative and creativity need to be applied. There are steps yet to be taken.
Open Mindedness and Receptivity
The only answer I can give is the wheels of change have begun to spin. To halt them would be a disaster waiting to happen. Open mindedness and applied insight will make more positive progress than nitpicking and fingerpointing. We have the technology, brainpower, and the need to create positive change. Let’s stop the bickering and begin the process to take healthcare to a sufficient level to serve all Americans well.

Think on It

Think on it

Thought and creativity have one thing in common. We have to take our time and think on it. Don’t allow our selves to rushed and don’t put ourselves in position to be rushed. Sure you may feel you do your best work under pressure but the flowering of true creativity works best when freedom is the word.

Pressure adds constraints

Suddenly, we are racing against the clock. If your creativity were a pie chart, on slice would be on beating the clock. That thought is wasting mental processes that could be applied to the process of creation. It’s a deadspot weighing you down with needless pressure.

Freedom

It the lacking of constraints the adds gusto and flair to projects. You can do things like embellish, change, and add on enhancements. The project results are fuller and more attractive. Challenge yourself and try something new.

In Choosing The Unknown

Life offers limitless possibilities on one hand. On the other it also grants us a cornucopia of obstacles and hazards. So, as we look down the paths of life in front of us we are left to ponder where will the really take us? We can only guess at what the twist and turns will bring. The futures are only determined by the choices we make both good and bad.

Adventure
That is the only guarantee choosing the unknown gives us. While not all adventures are good, some offer the converse. The mystery of it all can be just as compelling as it is scary. Good are bad as we emerge from each adventure the a person would be wise to take away the knowledge of lessons learned. They also should mine out the positives and store them away in a place ready for application.

The Graduate
May it be high school, college, grad school or tech school, the Graduate faces choosing the unknown on so many different levels. In choosing the unknown the rewards are a mystery. In choosing the known doesn’t make for a guarantee of positive rewards. I was witness to my own father reaching out into the unknown and changing professions multiple times. Only once did he fail and that was miserably enough to send most people in a downward spiral. Believe me it was truly rock bottom. In the rest he would each time rise to the top excelling to point where he would end up in a managerial position he never really wanted. His whole professional life was built on a series of choosing the unknown.

Success can be a forerunner as much as a result
Success leads us to more choices of the unknown than the path that took us there. In fact success is a choices of the unknown magnet. While in choosing the unknown to venture forth we open ourselves up to new horizons, challenges and motivations. We feed our souls with types of stimulation, choosing the known could never present us. Each success and failure from doing so leaves us with the ambition to propel us forward. Yes they offer us the ability to apply initiative and creativity in ways that make us grow in self-empowerment.

It was announced the BlockBuster the movie rental giant of the ’90’s is shuttering all 300 of their remaining stores. Along with that it’s NetFlix’s like division will cease operations. Coincidentally one of my FaceBook groups posted a black and white pic of the iconic Ice Cream stand Hoyers. What both places had in common is that at one time this places brought friends and families many hours of special times. Yes, they brought people together to enjoy themselves and each other. I miss those times.

Hoyers also sold Christmas trees many of which adorned my family homes first as kid then in my shared bachelor pad and yet again when I married and continued when I divorced. These memories stick with you. Time passes bringing us opportunity to create new memories. Life is lived in the moment and in those blockbuster memories. As I found out the hard way in both the good and bad times we endure. They will always be kept alive as long as we take the time to recall and share them among others and within ourselves. Maybe we may never be able to go back, but in a way we never left.

Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress.

But I repeat myself.
Mark Twain

Before the last elections the polls showed much of America thought much the same about Congress as Mark Twain did in his time. We were unhappy with the inaction and ineptitude of our so-called representatives. Yet, after the election most of the same people kept their seats. And our discord grew. It still does. How many people lives were affected by the government shutdown? The answer is simply too many. What’s in place now is only a temporary stop gap. It simply means too many people’s quality of life is hanging in the wind waiting for the next time. There is only one answer, change. We the people have the power to institute that change. The time is now to start looking for new alternatives to the old guard. The time is now to start trading words in for action. Ours is the greatest country in the world. Each and everyone of us share in and are born empowered to take control and institute the changes we need. Now is the time to live the words the propel our great country, We The People and reverse our course and regain the full benefits of the greatness we strive for everyday.

Mark Twain

The date was February 10th, 2010. I woke up feeling very woozy. I took a few steps and lost consciousness for a few seconds. I kept myself upright brushed it off to a point. A queasiness. stayed with me the whole day. It had snowed so I shoveled afterwards doing chores right up until it was time to fetch the pizza for the Superbowl party I was hosting. It was after the game I went to stand up and found I no longer had control of my body. I was sprawled over the table in front of me. Thus began a new ordeal.

For the rest of the month I remained hospitalized as doctors performed over a million dollars worth of testing all coming up negative. During that time my condition declined steadily until all I had left was minimal control of hand movement. Though no test verified it I was deemed to have had a stroke. The next step was to ship me to a nursing home having been told I would at best achieve minimal improvement and never walk again.

Remember the Mark Twain quote. Afterward 2 years and countless hours of self initiated therapy along with the relentless efforts of a therapy team working with little resources and a lot of heart I was walking with a cane. In my third year new doctors re-diagnosed me as having not a stroke but a rare blood nerve disorder. After a grueling 12 day ordeal of plasma replacement therapy reversal began to take leaps and bounds toward recovery. I am continuing with a series of 8 sessions over a period of 8 months.

Insurance doesn’t cover anymore therapy so I work on my own in shared room where my space is 6 x 8 including bed stand alone closet and a set of drawers. Creativity came in when I gained access of the internet and downloaded no equipment exercise videos and rebuilt my body. For example I had a situation where I picked up a 200 plus man wheelchair and all off the ground and move him several feet. I will never be totally back but I now have a chance at a decent quality of life.

So, now you understand the large time gap in this blog. As of now I have limited internet access but I have begun the new era of rebuilding. Have no fear this will not become a pity party. This blog will return to it’s roots of creativity and initiative. So, please check back with me as we enter the new era and the return to greatness.

The Life Key To Despair

Posted on Updated on

Despair is like a lock. It literally binds a person to the emotion of their problem. The definition of despair goes something like this:

As a verb-to lose, give up, or be without hope
As a noun- to have no hope

To breaking down anything to it’s meaning is useless if you don’t use it to guide you into action. Right now, you are thinking “who wants to be hopeless?” The answer is no one and that will only be the direction taken if that is what you chose. You and I have to understand that knowledge of the meaning is merely to find definition of what we are experiences not what we will do.

The Life Key
In a single word, initiative. With initiative you and I need to take a path to counter a negative or feed into a positive. If you know the meaning of despair than you can deduce it’s counter is hope. Hope comes from the desire to raise above despair by committing to action. Action is best worked with a plan. And a plan is best laid knowing the foundation you are working with. Without taking initiative there can be no hope. It all comes down to the choice. Unless you relinquish it the choice will always be yours.

Have You Been Heard On Healthcare?

Posted on Updated on

I was sitting in a Dunkin Donuts the other day doing a blog on location. As I was doing my thing I was listening to some people at another table discussing the ongoing battle to reform healthcare. There was a pattern to how each person presented their view and points. And I realized I had witnessed that pattern or a form of it many times before.

The pattern
First the group obviously was self contained. They each knew each other enough to express themselves freely. Many of their statements contained versions of “do you think they are…” or “Has anyone heard they have” addressed this or that and “Are they doing anything about this..” You get the picture.

The truth be known
It’s nice to talk among friends. It’s great to step forward and be a facilitator or contributor. If you have a concern about healthcare reform and what is it encompassing, research, ask and speak out. Hundreds of people were exploring flight much the same as the Wright Brothers. They took it one step farther. Then someone else took it another step farther. We went from puddle jumping to planet hopping because people spoke the questions that needed to be explored. Healthcare needs your initiative to ask your question whether it has been heard from somewhere else before or not. Why? Because the right questions are asking many times before the right person find the right answers. That is how initiative will speak the creativity to breach the gap from questions to solutions.

Initiating Your Future

Posted on Updated on

The key to building your future is not waiting for a day or time to begin. The time and place whenever and where ever you start will always be the same. We call them, “Here and Now.”

The reverse idiom
Many people chances to achieve successes are undermined by “putting off till tomorrow what you could have done today.” Oh we have our reasons or maybe I should say excuses. If you truly want that accomplishment than there is no tomorrow. The is only the call of the here and now. When you apply that mindset to all you want to accomplish, you will find that there is no failure. The only true failure is the failure to take action in life, love and achieving all your desire. Understand this and you will find everything will become easier in initiating your future.
